Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos state has threatened to sack recalcitrant civil servants over persistent lateness to work.

The governor is upset that in spite of several warnings, civil servants have continued to arrive late to work, which has reduced their productivity.

Lateness to work was one of the agenda discussed last week, at the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting, where the governor expressed displeasure over the persistent lateness to work by civil servants, and charged heads of ministries to monitor their staff.

“In order to curb this unbecoming attitude, some members of the State Executive Council have been mandated to go round all the government offices and officers found arriving late to work will be dealt with according to the provisions of the public Service Regulations,” a circular from the office of the Head of Service, Mr. Yakub Balogun, stated.

“Please, be informed that henceforth, the state government will no longer hesitate in showing recalcitrant workers the way out of service. All Directors of Finance and Administration are hereby enjoined to keep attendance registers in their various ministries/agencies and ensure that the register is ruled off at 8:15 a.m., everyday,” he added.

The circular, dated 19 December, 2008, was issued after the SEC meeting, and is part of the last warning to civil servants to brace up or get sacked. The circular, signed by Balogun, read: “It has been observed with dismay that despite many warnings against coming late to work in particular, circular No. 2, Ref. No. CIR/HOS/07/Vol. III/206 of 18 July, 2007, officers have developed a penchance for this unacceptable attitude.

“It is on record that a number of officers still arrive at work very late and in some cases leave before the close of work. For the avoidance of doubt, the resumption and closing time still remains 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.

“This lackadaisical attitude to work will no longer be tolerated. Hence, all public servants must be at their desks by 8 a.m., as late comers shall be seriously sanctioned.”

Also, the Ministry of Health has issued an internal memo warning staff against coming late to work, and threatened to sanction offenders appropriately. As a result of the circulars, many civil servants now resume early to avoid being sacked.
